                                          Economic activities by men and women

                                      Subject- Economics Ch- 2 People as Resources


                   1.  Economic Activities

                          o  Primary Activities: Agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining. The activities that is
                              directly engaged in extracting resources from the nature or utilising it for
                              creating a product.

                          o  Secondary Activities: Manufacturing industries. Converting the natural
                              resources available to make a product of utility for the consumption of the
                              people.


                          o  Tertiary Activities: Services like education, banking, transport. In this category
                              people provide support and render services so that society functions
                              smoothly.



                   2.  Types of Economic Activities

                          o  Market Activities: Activities for pay/remuneration (production for sale).

                          o  Non-Market Activities: Production for self-consumption (e.g., household
                              work, farming for home use).






               Due to historical and cultural reasons there is a division of labour between men and women
               in the family. Women generally look after domestic chores and men work in the fields. Even
               if women get jobs outside, they are not paid equally. They work in the unorganised sectors
               where they are paid less.
