Effects of Earthquake:
• It can cause damage to buildings causing loss of life and property.
• It can cause damage to Dams and bridges which may bring floods.
• Earthquake in the ocean bed can cause Tsunami. (Major tsunami hit India on

Precautions to be taken in Earthquake prone Areas:
1. Consult qualified architects and structural engineers to make building
earthquake resistant.
2. In highly seismic areas it is better to use mud or timber instead of using heavy
construction material.
3. The Cupboards and shelves in homes should be fixed to the walls.
Protection against Earthquake:
1. Indoors:
i. Take shelter under a strong table
ii. Stand near the corners of the room.
iii. There should by firefighting mechanism in the house.
2. Outdoors:
i. Go out of the house in an open area
ii. Do not use lift instead use stairs to go out of the house
iii. Stay low on the ground.
iv. If you are in a car or a bus do not come out and take it away from a tall
building to an open space.
