Sub-Topic – Characteristics of Synthetic Fibres, Plastics and Types of Plastics
LESSON NOTES
CHARACTERISTICS OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES:
Synthetic fibres are very strong.
Synthetic fibres are more durable.
Synthetic fibres absorb very little, so dries up quickly.
Synthetic fibres are wrinkle resistant.
Synthetic fibres are light-weight and extremely fine.
Synthetic fibres are not damaged by moths and other insects.
Synthetic fibres do not get shrinked after washing and are easy to maintain.
Synthetic fibres are less expensive and readily available as compared to those of natural
fibres.
DISADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES:
Synthetic fibres melt on heating and stick to the body of the person causing severe burns.
Clothes made up of synthetic fibres make us feel hot and uncomfortable for wearing during
hot summer weather.
[NOTE: The manufacturing of fully synthetic fibres is helping in the conservation of forests.
This is because the fully synthetic fibres are manufactured from petrochemicals, so no trees
have to be cut down for making them.]
