CHAPTER-8: COMPARING QUANTITIES
SUBTOPIC: CONVERTING RATIO TO PERCENTAGE, INCREASE AND DECREASE
PERCENTAGE
Ratios are often expressed in the form m: n or m/n. To convert a ratio into the form of
a percentage, simply divide m by n and then multiply the result by 100. For example, If
the ratio is 12:4, convert it to the form 12/4, which is an equation we can solve. After
that multiply the result by 100 to get the percentage.
Example
If the profit of Rs. 2500 is divided among three partners in such a way that A, B and C
got the two parts, three parts and five parts of profit respectively. How much money will
each get? What percent of the profit do they get?
Solution
The three partners are getting profit in the ratio of 2: 3: 5, so the total of the parts is
2 + 3 + 5 = 10
Increase and Decrease Percentage:
Sometimes we have to find the increase or decrease in certain quantities as a
percentage. Like the increase in population, decrease in sale etc.
