Ch-Time and Motion
Subtopic: Uniform and Non-uniform motion
Uniform Motion: When a body moving in straight line covers equal distance in equal intervals
of time, it is said to be in uniform motion. Example: A car moving with constant speed on a
straight road.
Non-uniform motion: When a body covers unequal distance in equal interval of time, it is
called non-uniform motion. Example: A car moving in traffic.
Distance-time graph: The plot of distance travelled by a body against the time.
Plotting Distance-Time Graph:
i. Time is marked in X axis and distance is marked in Y axis.
ii. Suitable scales are selected to represent quantities on both the axes.
iii. Plot points corresponding to each value on both the axes for time and distance covered.
iv. Join all the points to obtain the required graph.
Nature of Distance-Time (D-T) Graph for various motion:
Uniform Motion: The D-T graph for uniform motion is a straight line inclined to time axis.
Non-Uniform motion: The D-T graph for Non-uniform motion is curved or zig-zag line.
Body at Rest (No motion): The D-T graph for body at rest is horizontal line, parallel to time
axis.
