Neither the above group of words are sentences nor they give us complete meaning. It is a phrases
which is a part of sentence which doesn‟t have a subject or a verb to it. In writing, you can use a
phrase as a part of your sentence to add more meaning to the sentences. However a phrase can‟t
stand on its own.
What Is a Phrase? ( to be written on the CW Notebook)
Words can be grouped together, but without a subject or a verb. This is called a phrase.
Because a phrase has neither subject nor verb, it can‟t form a „predicate‟. This is a structure
that must contain a verb, and it tells you something about what the subject is doing.
Phrases can be very short – or quite long. Two examples of phrases are:
“After dinner”
“a very hungry catterpilar”.
NOTE - Phrases can’t be used alone, but you can use them as part of a sentence, where they
are used as parts of speech.
Let us find out what are the differences between a sentence, phrase and a clause.
