Topic Sentence

Topic sentence is a
sentence that expresses the
main idea of the paragraph
in which it occurs.

It is usually the
first sentence of
the paragraph.

Example: "My summer
vacation at my
grandparents' farm was Example: "Monsoon is
filled with fun". my favourite season".

Learning objective: The students will learn what a topic sentence is and
how to write one.

A topic sentence is a sentence that introduces a paragraph by showing the

one topic that will be the focus or main idea of that paragraph.

Topic sentences should:

 Be specific and clear.

 Appear in or near the first sentence of the paragraph.

 Introduce the topic of the paragraph.

The topic sentence helps us frame a paragraph. It gives an idea about what
the paragraph will be about. All the other sentences then will follow the

same idea of the topic sentence so it is clear and on track with the main
idea of the paragraph.
