               NOTES-

               SUB TOPIC- THE SANGHA

                       The followers of Buddhism and Jainism stayed together in Sangha, an
                       association.
                       Vinaya pataka- the book where the rules for Buddhist Sangha were written.
                       All men can be part of the sangha whereas the others like women had to take
                       permission from their husbands, slaves from masters, etc.
                       They led simple lives and begged for food, so called bhikkhus or bhikkhunis.
                       Meetings were also held to solve their problems.
               SUB TOPIC- MONASTREIS


                       Monasteries were built for the wanderings monks especially during rainy
                       seasons.
                       Also known as viharas, they were made of wood or brick.
                       The land for vihara was often donated by rich people.
               ASHRAMA SYSTEM

                       These are the 4 stages of life:-
                         BRAHMACHARYA- to lead simple life and study Vedas.
                         GRIHASTHA- to marry
                         VANAPRASTHA- to live in the forest and meditate.
                         SANYASA- to leave everything and become sanyasis.
