LESSON NOTE
Oceans cover about 71% of Earth’s surface.
Crucial for climate regulation, oxygen production, and global transport.
Salinity, currents, and temperature vary across oceans.
Ocean currents (e.g., Gulf Stream) impact global climate and weather.
Oceans of the world have wonderful flora and fauna, just like land.
Though we have so much of water on earth, yet people in different parts of the world
facing water scarcity, due to uneven distribution of water, depletion of ground water,
climate change, pollution and salinity of large amount of water.
There are 5 major oceans in the world.
OCEANS POSITION FEATURE
Pacific Ocean Largest Mariana Trench (deepest
point on Earth).
Atlantic Ocean Second largest busiest
Indian Ocean Third largest Named after a country
Southern Ocean Fourth largest Encircles Antarctica
Arctic Ocean Smallest Located around N-pole
The smaller extensions of oceans are called as sea, bay and gulf.
Sea: A smaller body of saltwater partly enclosed by land but connected to an ocean.
eg: Arabian sea
Bay: A broad inlet of the sea where the land curves inward.eg: Bay of Bengal
Gulf: A large coastal indentation that is larger and deeper than a bay. eg: Gulf of
Mannar.
