Sub topic 3- (Jainism)
1- Jainism is another important school of thought that became widespread at the
same time.
2- Prince Vardhamana was born into a royal family in the early 6th century BCE.
3- He was born in Vaishali, in present day Bihar.
4- At the age of 30, he decided to leave his home and go in search of spiritual
knowledge.
5- He became known as ‘Mahavira’, or ‘great hero’, after attaining enlightenment.
6- He preached about ahimsa (non-violence or non-injuring).
7- He also taught about Anekantavaad and Aparigraha.
8- Anekantavaad says that the truth has many aspects and cannot be fully defined
by any single statement.
9- Aparigraha means ‘non-possession’ and advises detachment from material
possessions.
10- Jainism also insists on the interconnectedness and interdependence of all
creatures.
11- In both Jainism and Buddhism, monks and nuns travelled far and wide to
spread the teachings of Mahavira and Buddha respectively.
12- Some of them created new monasteries in faraway places, others led ascetic
lives in rock cut caves.
