LN- Rounding numbers to the nearest 10
Learning objective: Students will learn to round a number nearest to tens
to helps them estimate quickly.
Rounding is a way to make a number simpler. When we round a
number, we make it closer to a specific place value, such as the
nearest 10, 100, or 1,000.
To round a number to the nearest 10, we look at the digit in the ones
place. If the digit in the ones place is 5 or greater, we round up to the
next 10. If the digit in the ones place is less than 5, we round down to
the previous 10.
What is Rounding?
o Making a number simpler but keeping its value close.
o Helps estimate quickly.
Nearest Tens Place
o Look at the ones digit to decide.
o Example: In 43, the tens place is 4.
Rounding Rules
o If the ones digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 →
round down.
E.g., 43 → 40
o If the ones digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 →
round up.
E.g., 47 → 50
Examples to Practice
o 12 → 10
