LE PRONOM <Y>

‘Y’ Pronoun

The y pronoun replaces the name of the place which shows the destination
(aller) or the situation (etre,habiter,rester,etc.)and also when the noun is

introduced by the verb following the preposition ‘a’.

Eg.Tu vas en France ?-Oui, j’y vais.

Elle pense a ses prochaines vacances ?-Oui,elle y pense beaucoup.

Note: If the noun replaced by the person followed by the preposition ‘a’,
disjunctive pronoun is used instead of y pronoun but not always.

Eg. Elle pense a ses parents ? -Oui, elle pense a eux.

Elle pense a ses parents ? -Oui, elle y pense.

Va a la plage ! -Vas-y.

In position statement-Vas-y !(It is necessary to add ‘s’ in the 2 person
singular of the regular verbs as y is also considered as a vowel for its
pronunciation.)

In negative statement- N’y va pas!
