               Principles of treatment

               1. To reduce the effects of the diseases
By taking medicines to bring down the effects of the disease like fever, pain, etc. and

by taking complete rest to conserve the body’s energy.

               2. To kill the cause of the disease
By taking suitable antibiotics and drugs which kill the disease causing microbes.

               Principles of Prevention
While treating an infectious disease, following three limitations are normally kept in

               mind-

                   • Once a person suffers from a disease, his body functions are impaired and
                       may never recover completely.

                   • As treatment takes time, the patient is confined to bed for some time.
                   • The infected person serves as a potential source of spread of this infectious

disease to other persons in the community.

Considering these limitations, prevention of diseases is considered far better
                 than their cure.

                   1. General method: These include-

                      a. Sanitation- Public hygiene is one basic key to the prevention of infectious
                           diseases.

                      b. Eradication of vectors- Vector borne infections can be eradicated by
                           providing clean environments.

                      c. Sterilization- Patients’ surrounding and articles of use should be sterilised.
                      d. Isolation- A person suffering from an infectious disease should be kept in

isolation so that healthy people may protect themselves against such

                           infections.
                      e. Education- People should be educated about the infectious diseases so

                           that they can protect themselves.
                      f. Proper and sufficient food
