What does it mean to be socially marginalized?

 Marginalised – Forced to occupy the sides and not be at the centre of things.

 In the classroom or in the social environment groups of people may
experience exclusion. This can be because of the following reasons :

                          (I) – Speak different language

                         (II) – Follow different customs
(III) – Belong to different religious groups

                        (IV) – Poverty
                         (V) – Social status

 Sometimes marginalised communities are viewed with hostility and fear. This

leads to their not having resources and their inability to assert their rights.

 They experience a sense of disadvantage and powerlessness in the
economic, social, cultural and political spheres.

Adivasis and Marginalisation – Adivasis lost their land in the jungle because they
were told that there was iron ore under it. They were promised jobs and money and

so they sold away their land and eventually everyone was forced to move to the city
               in search of livelihoods.

               Who are Adivasis?

 Adivasis – meaning original inhabitants. They are communities who are lived
and continue to live in close association with forests.
