               Prashastis and              A prashasti, a Sanskrit word, meaning ‘in praise of’ which
               what they tell us             were composed for some of the rulers.
                                           In Samudragupta, prashasti  the poet praised the king in
               Samudragupta’s                glowing terms- as a warrior, as a king who won victories in
               prashasti                     battle, who was learned and the best of poets.
                                            Various maps are drawn as per the information provided by
                                             prashastis.

                                           Most prashastis also mentioned the ancestors of the ruler.
               Genealogies
                                           Samudragupta’s mother, Kumara Devi, belonged to the
                                             Lichchhavi gana, while his father, Chandragupta, was the
                                             first ruler of the Gupta dynasty.

                                           Inscriptions and coins provides information about
                                             Chandragupta II, son of Samudragupta.

                                           He led an expedition to western India, where he overcame
                                             the last of the Shakas.

                                           His court was full of learned people, including Kalidasa the
                                             poet, and Aryabhata the astronomer.
