        CITIES WITH MANY FUNCTIONS

        MATHURA-


            ✓  Located at two major travel routes
            ✓  Fine sculpture was produced
            ✓  Became the second capital of Kushanas
            ✓  Religious centre- Buddhist monasteries, Jaina shrines are found, also Lord Krishna worship
               centre.
            ✓  Inscriptions have been found.

        CRAFTS AND CRAFTS PERSONS

            ✓  Crafts of pottery like NORTHERN BLACK POLISHED WARE.
            ✓  Crafts- persons formed their ow associations known as shrenis.
               •  Acted as training centres
               •  Banks
               •  Distributed the finished product among the craftsmen.


        ARIKAMEDU

            ✓  Situated in Puducherry.
            ✓  2200 years ago, it was a coastal settlement.
            ✓  Findings- pottery (amphorae, Arretine ware), Roman lamps, glassware, gems.
            ✓  Small tanks used as dyeing vats have been found.
