Movement and locomotion
One of the characteristic features of Living organisms is their ability to show some or
other kind of movement.
Movement– It is the temporary or permanent movement of a body or its parts from its
original position.
Example-
• In humans – Movement of the jaw while speaking.
• In animals- Movement of the legs while walking.
• In plants- ‘touch me not ‘plant can close its leaflets when touched.
• Certain types of flowers can open and close according to the time of the day.
Locomotion-The movement of the entire body from one place to another.
Example- Fly, Run, walk, crawl, etc.
Plants cannot change their position so they show only movement and no
locomotion
MOVEMENT IN EARTHWORM
• An earthworm has an elongated body.
• No bones and limbs.
• It has many ring -like segments that have muscles, which help them to
move from one place to another.
• These muscles contract and expand which provides a push that helps the
body to move forward.
• It has bristle-like structures called setae under the body, used to grip the
ground.
