Earth as a magnet
 Earth has two geographic poles, north pole and south pole.

 Magnetic poles are at the Arctic (South pole of earth’s magnet) and at
the Antarctica (North pole of the earth’s magnet)

 A magnetic compass aligns itself towards the magnetic north pole of
earth.
 The magnetism of earth is due to the movement of molten iron in
earth’s outer core.

DEMAGNETISATION
The phenomenon in which a permanent magnet loses its magnetism is
known as Demagnetization.

Loss of magnetic property:
A magnet may loss its magnetic property due to
 Heating
 Hammering
 dropping
