SUMMARY WRITING
MIND MAP
Strategy for Summary writing: Writing a good summary demonstrates that you clearly
understand a text and that you can make the other person understand what you have read and are
trying to say. There is a quick method to help students determine the key details in order to
summarize a fictional text. For this strategy, students respond to five short prompts as they read
the text.
Somebody What/ Who is the main character?
Wanted What does the main character want?
But What is the problem?
So How does the character try to solve the problem?
Then How does the story end?/ What happens in the end?
Use the following tips:
1. Shorten the text in such a way that all facts are in the summary. ...
2. Skim the text. ...
3. Read the text again to understand more details. ...
4. Make notes (use keywords). ...
5. Form sentences with the help of your keywords. ...
6. Connect the sentences using suitable conjunctions. ...
7. Use Simple Present or Simple Past.
