Lesson Notes
In 1800 in Britain (England), the cotton trade generated employment for thousands of
people.Children were exploited for their size and nimbleness and were often forced to work
twelve hours a day in highly dangerous conditions for little pay. Johnny is one such boy who
belongs to a very poor family and works in a factory to support his family. He sacrifices his
luxury for his sister and mother whom he loved immensely. On his way to the factory, he
finds a silver dollar which he, at first, thinks is a silver medal. He meets a lady who enquires
him about the medal. The lady tells him that it is a silver dollar. He is very happy to hear it
and thinks of buying shoes with it. The kind lady gave him a small basket which contained
some food for him and his family. It happened tobe the happiest day of Johnny’s life.
The boy rushes to the factory in
his torn and large shoes without
any food.
On his way, he finds a silver dollar
which he thinks is a medal.
He comes across a kind lady who
tells him that it is a silver dollar.
He was very happy to hear that and
dreams of buying new shoes with it.
Seeing the pale face of Johnny, the kind lady
takes pity on him and feeds him.
