CHAPTER-COORDINATION COMPOUNDS
SUBTOPIC-Introduction, ligands, coordination number, IUPAC
nomenclature.
KEY NOTES:
The transition metals form a large number of complex compounds in
which the metal atoms are bound to a number of anions or neutral
molecules. In modern terminology such compounds are called
coordination compounds.
The number of ions or molecules surrounding the metal ion is called
the co-ordinate number of metal ion.
The species which can donate a pair of eletron to central metal atom
or ion during the formation of coordination compound is called a
ligand.
Ambidenote ligand: Ligands which can link through two different
atoms present in it are called ambidentate lignds.

Homoleptic complexes- complexes contain one kind of
ligands.
Heteroleptic compounds – complexes contain different types
of ligands.
Naming of complex or co-ordination compound.
(a) For cotionic complex: ligands + metal normal name
(oxidation no.) + ion
(b) For compound containing complex as cation: ligands +
metal atom(oxidation no.)+anion.
(c) For anionic complex : ligands + metal atom (ate) +
(oxidation no.) + ion
(d) For compound containing anionic complex : cation +
ligands + metal atom (oxidation no.)
(e) For neutral compound: lingad + metal atom (oxidation no.)
