                                                     Lesson Notes

                                                     SUB-TOPIC-4

               (Social
               Outcome): Accommodation of Social Diversity
Accommodati No society can fully and permanently resolve conflicts among different
on of social groups. But we can learn to respect these differences and we can
diversity and evolve mechanisms to negotiate the differences. Democracy is best
Dignity and suited to produce this outcome. Ability to handle social differences,
freedom of divisions and conflicts is a plus point of democratic regimes. But
citizens: democracy must fulfil 2 conditions in order to achieve this outcome:

                                     1. The majority always needs to work with the minority so that
governments function to represent the general view.
                                     2. Rule by majority means that in case of every decision or in case
of every election, different persons and groups may and can form
                                        a majority.

Democracy stands much superior to any other form of government in
promoting dignity and freedom of the individual. Every individual
wants to receive respect from fellow beings. Often conflicts arise among
individuals because some feel that they are not treated with due
                                 respect.

                                  1. Dignity of women. The one way to ensure that women related
problems get adequate attention is to have more women as elected
representatives. To achieve this, it is legally binding to have a fair
proportion of women in the elected bodies. Panchayati Raj in India
has reserved one-third seats in local government bodies for
women. In March 2010, the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed
in the Rajya Sabha ensuring 33% reservation for women in
                                      Parliament and State legislative bodies.
                                  2. Democracy has strengthened the claims of disadvantaged and
discriminated castes. When governments are formed, political
